Beijing-based designer Guanglong Chen has been honored with the Silver A' Design Award for his innovative "Chinese Zodiac" font, which merges the ancient seal script with the twelve iconic zodiac animals, creating a visually striking and culturally rich typeface that celebrates Chinese heritage.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Guanglong Chen's "Chinese Zodiac" font design has been recognized with the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in the Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication category for 2025. Developed in Beijing between February and April 2020, this project reimagines the traditional Chinese seal script by integrating the unique characteristics of the twelve zodiac animals-Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig-into each character, resulting in a memorable and dynamic typeface.
Inspired by the deep symbolism and folklore of the Chinese zodiac, Chen's design elevates the ancient seal script, a calligraphic style with over 3,000 years of history, by infusing it with the spirit and imagery of each zodiac sign. The process began with brush and ink sketches on rice paper, which were then digitized and refined using advanced software to ensure high-resolution, versatile electronic files suitable for a wide range of applications, from branding and cultural promotion to packaging and corporate identity.
The "Chinese Zodiac" font stands out for its graphical distinctiveness and cultural resonance, making traditional calligraphy more accessible and engaging for contemporary audiences. Each character not only preserves the essence of the original seal script but also vividly expresses the personality of its corresponding zodiac animal, offering a fresh perspective on Chinese visual culture. The design's versatility and high-definition quality allow it to be used in various print and digital media, further amplifying its impact and reach.
This award-winning project reflects Guanglong Chen's commitment to bridging historical art forms with modern design, inviting global audiences to appreciate the depth and beauty of Chinese cultural heritage through innovative visual communication.
