Shenzhen-based designer Wenduan Su has been honored with a Bronze A' Packaging Design Award for Mahjong Lucky Coffee, a unique coffee packaging concept inspired by Chinese mahjong culture that gamifies the coffee-drinking experience and appeals to a new generation of consumers.

Mahjong Lucky Coffee: Fusing Chinese Tradition with Modern Coffee Culture in Award-Winning Packaging Design

Mahjong Lucky Coffee, designed by Wenduan Su in Shenzhen, has captured the attention of the design world by winning the Bronze A' Packaging Design Award in 2025. This innovative packaging concept draws inspiration from the traditional Chinese game of mahjong, blending cultural heritage with the everyday ritual of coffee drinking. The design introduces a playful, gamified element to coffee consumption, making each cup an interactive experience that resonates with young consumers and fans of Chinese culture alike.

The packaging features bold, youthful mahjong-inspired fonts and vibrant orange-red color schemes, reflecting both the energy of food culture and the rising popularity of mahjong among younger generations. Each bag contains a month's supply of coffee, cleverly divided into two "hands" of cards. One hand is pre-arranged as a lucky winning set, symbolizing good fortune for the buyer, while the other hand is left incomplete, encouraging users to "draw" a portion of coffee each day-mirroring the suspense and excitement of drawing tiles in a mahjong game. This interactive approach not only enhances daily enjoyment but also introduces blind box attributes, increasing playability and encouraging repeat purchases.

Mahjong Lucky Coffee was realized using mold injection and origami techniques, with a test model produced through 3D printing. The design was developed in Shenzhen starting in December 2023 and showcased at a university exhibition hall. Extensive research into the resurgence of mahjong culture among young people informed the project, ensuring the packaging would be both culturally relevant and appealing. By integrating traditional elements with contemporary lifestyle habits, Wenduan Su's design stands out as a creative bridge between heritage and modernity, making coffee breaks more engaging and meaningful.
