Kiyoka Yamazuki's hand-illustrated information magazine "Aisanka," created to promote Aichi Prefecture's unique culture and festivals in the lead-up to the World Expo, has been honored with the Silver A' Design Award in 2025 for outstanding achievement in graphics, illustration, and visual communication.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Aisanka, an information magazine designed by acclaimed illustrator Kiyoka Yamazuki, has been recognized with the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in the Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design Category for 2025. Conceived between 1994 and 1998, the magazine was created to promote the rich traditions, vibrant festivals, and industrial achievements of Aichi Prefecture, both to local residents and audiences across Japan and internationally, as part of efforts to support Aichi's bid to host the World Expo.
The magazine's cover illustrations, crafted by Yamazuki, draw inspiration from Aichi's centuries-old festival traditions. Despite not witnessing the festivals in person, Yamazuki meticulously studied video footage and historical documents to authentically capture the energy, color, and communal spirit of these events. Her hand-drawn artwork, characterized by warmth and vivid hues, became a central feature of the magazine, inviting readers to rediscover the pride and cultural wealth of their region.
Published twice a year over four years, Aisanka was distributed widely, including to the Aichi Prefectural Government, branch offices, and other prefectures, serving as a key tool for regional promotion and community engagement. The magazine not only highlighted Aichi's traditional culture and industry but also encouraged participation in urban development and fostered a sense of local identity. Yamazuki's work received notable recognition, including a personal letter and a mini kite from the Tahara Kite Preservation Society after her illustration of the Tahara Kite Festival. The Silver A' Design Award celebrates Aisanka's creative excellence, technical mastery, and its role in elevating Aichi's profile on the world stage.
