DESIGN STUDIO CROW CO., LTD has completed the Sosei Sapporo M Gallery, a pioneering five-star boutique hotel located on the historic grounds of Sapporo's first beer brewery, blending Hokkaido's frontier legacy with contemporary luxury to foster regional development and cultural connection. The project was finalized in February 2024 in Sapporo, Japan.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Sosei Sapporo M Gallery stands as a tribute to Sapporo's transformation from untamed frontier to vibrant metropolis, drawing inspiration from the pioneering Kaitakushi era and the birth of Japan's beer industry. Designed by DESIGN STUDIO CROW CO., LTD, the hotel occupies the historic site of Sapporo's first full-scale beer brewery, seamlessly weaving together the city's rich heritage and its aspirations for the future. The project, which began in November 2023 and concluded in February 2024, marks a new chapter in luxury hospitality for Hokkaido.
The hotel's design is anchored in the theme of "Frontier Spirit," celebrating both the early pioneers and the Braumeister-the master brewers who shaped Sapporo's identity. The interiors artfully blend traditional Japanese architectural techniques with refined Western materials, echoing the eclectic mix that characterized the region's development. Guests are welcomed by an art installation inspired by hops, symbolizing the genesis of Sapporo's beer culture, while the lobby and public spaces evoke the ambiance of historical gatherings, featuring curated books and imported artifacts reminiscent of the city's cosmopolitan roots.
A standout feature is the main dining room's illuminated wall, crafted from approximately 3,000 beer bottles and inspired by the journey of a Japanese brewer to Germany. This innovative installation, combined with a series of arches reminiscent of brewery architecture, creates a timeless dining experience. Guest rooms-including Superior, Deluxe, and Hanamasu Suite categories-are designed to evoke the warmth and authenticity of pioneer residences, blending Japanese and Western influences through bespoke textiles, forms, and furnishings. Throughout, references to Hokkaido's natural bounty-barley, hops, and local artistry-infuse the hotel with a sense of place and narrative depth.
The realization of Sosei Sapporo M Gallery involved extensive research into Hokkaido's architectural and brewing history, including visits to the Hokkaido Development Village and the Kaitakushi Beer Brewery. Overcoming technical challenges, such as sourcing and illuminating thousands of beer bottles, the design team succeeded in creating a space that not only honors Sapporo's past but also sets a new standard for hospitality in the region. The hotel's opening signals a renewed commitment to cultural preservation, innovation, and community engagement in Sapporo.
