Yokohama-based designer Eisuke Tachikawa and the NOSIGNER team have been honored with the Silver A' Packaging Design Award 2024 for "Jo Chu," a sake bottle that reimagines Japanese tradition through a unique, heatless distillation process and a striking, sacred-inspired design.

Jo Chu, the latest creation from Eisuke Tachikawa and the NOSIGNER design team, has earned international recognition by securing the Silver A' Packaging Design Award in 2024. This remarkable sake bottle stands out not only for its innovative packaging but also for its pioneering approach to sake production, utilizing a heatless distillation method that preserves the delicate flavors of the sake. The design draws inspiration from the depth and tranquility of Japanese culture, integrating the "shīde" (paper streamers) motif, which signifies sacred spaces in Shinto tradition, and the organic, fluid form of a water droplet captured at the moment of release.
The Jo Chu bottle's asymmetrical, balloon-like shape is a tribute to the natural beauty of water and surface tension, symbolizing the purity and spiritual connection of sake in Japanese culture. The design process, led by Tachikawa with contributions from Aya Sakurai and Yuta Horimoto, focused on expressing both the aesthetic and cultural significance of sake as a bridge between people and the divine. Overcoming manufacturing challenges posed by the bottle's organic form, the team succeeded in creating a product that is both visually stunning and deeply meaningful.
By merging traditional symbolism with contemporary design and advanced distillation techniques, Jo Chu communicates the evolving possibilities of sake to a global audience. The bottle's distinctive identity not only enhances the drinking experience but also serves as a cultural ambassador, inviting appreciation for the artistry and spirituality inherent in Japanese sake. The recognition from the A' Design Award underscores the project's excellence in creativity, technical execution, and cultural storytelling.
