Himanshu Shekhar Soni's Tetra color markers, developed in Noida, India, and awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2018, transform ordinary markers into interactive building toys that encourage creativity, social skills, and sustainability among children by promoting reuse and imaginative play.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Tetra, designed by Himanshu Shekhar Soni, is a unique set of color markers that double as interactive building toys, offering children a creative and sustainable alternative to traditional stationery. Developed between January and March 2018 in Noida, India, Tetra was inspired by the desire to foster creativity, social interaction, and environmental awareness in young users. The markers feature a distinctive compound-shaped cap and barrel that snap together, enabling children to construct geometric, animal, floral, or abstract shapes, extending play beyond the page and into three-dimensional space.
Unlike standard markers that are discarded once the ink runs dry, Tetra encourages children to repurpose the components, promoting the value of reuse from an early age. The HDPE plastic construction ensures durability, while the injection-molded design makes the caps easy to press and pull apart, supporting both fine motor skills and imaginative exploration. By collecting and connecting the markers, children are motivated to collaborate, share, and develop social skills, making Tetra both a creative tool and a catalyst for positive behavioral development.
The design process involved extensive research into children's toys and stationery, identifying a gap in products that combine creativity, social engagement, and sustainability. Overcoming challenges in functionality and play value, Soni's solution integrates playful form with practical reuse, resulting in a product that not only entertains but also educates. Tetra's recognition with the Iron A' Design Award in the Toys, Games and Hobby Products category highlights its innovative approach and its contribution to a more thoughtful, sustainable future for children's products.
