Edwin Mintoff's EM Architects restore a 19th-century building into a modern university campus
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Edwin Mintoff, along with Pietro Di Raimondo and Mario Scicluna, restored the AUM British Building, damaged during WWII, into a university campus. The design draws inspiration from the building's industrial past and incorporates sustainable initiatives. The restoration showcases the historic fabric while rehabilitating the building for contemporary use.
Contemporary materials were intentionally chosen to distinguish them from the original historic fabric, ensuring a clear delineation of the building's timeline. The campus features 13 classrooms, 4 laboratories, a cafeteria, a library, offices, an internal garden, and receptions, seamlessly incorporating historical elements within the new contemporary designs.
The restoration project, located at Triq Dom Mintoff, Bormla, Malta, commenced in November 2016 and was completed by March 2019. The design process involved extensive research into the area's history, including analysis of historical documents and drawings dating back to the 1840s.
