About Furniture: A Comprehensive Handbook

Karla Kocijan, a postgraduate student of product design at the University of Zagreb, Croatia, has created a unique handbook titled "About Furniture." This handbook aims to fill the gap in the market by providing fundamental information on furniture history, types, and authors, making it a valuable resource for both students and experts alike.

The book is illustrated by hand with 140 illustrations, setting it apart from other furniture books that primarily use photographs. It covers four chapters: the history of furniture, furniture in Croatia from 1945 till today, iconic world furniture designs and their authors, vocabulary of forgotten furniture names, and a glossary of art history terms.

Printed with the support of the Croatian Ministry of Culture, the book has 230 pages and was published by Jesenski & Turk, Zagreb, Croatia. The project started during the Covid-19 lockdown in Zagreb, Croatia, and was completed the same year. However, due to import and printing problems caused by Covid-19 and the war in Ukraine, publishing was delayed until the end of 2022.

Researching for the book took over 7 months, with a focus on highlighting the work of female authors who were previously unrecognized. The most challenging part of the research was finding relevant information about women designers, whose work and lives were hidden under the names of factories or architects and their studios, especially in Croatia.

Karla Kocijan has previously won awards for her designs and has participated in various design festivals in Zagreb, including Design Week Zagreb, Design District, and Plan D. The "About Furniture" handbook was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2023, recognizing its well-designed, practical, and innovative approach.
