Winter Navel: Redefining Agricultural Product Packaging

Chao Xu's Winter Navel design project aims to redefine the traditional appearance of agricultural products, specifically the winter navel orange, by illustrating its elongated growth routine and the prosperous state of the farm. Inspired by the tale of Jack and the Beanstalk, the design depicts the twisted and intertwining stems of an orange tree in four seasons, emphasizing the powerful growth of the orchard and the harmony between nature and mankind.

The Winter Navel package includes two sizes of cardboard boxes, information cards, envelopes for orange peelers, and protection sheets for oranges. The hand-drawn illustrations were created with watercolor and color pencils, then scanned into Photoshop for further modification and combined with patterns and logos generated by a computer. The package was manufactured in two different sizes: a 5kg pack and a gift pack.

Chao Xu's design project started in June 2019 in Hangzhou and was completed in July 2019, with manufacturing taking place in Guangzhou in August 2019. The design team, led by Chao Xu, included Mohan Ni for watercolor illustration and Chao Xu for graphic design.

The Winter Navel package design was awarded Bronze in the A' Packaging Design Award in 2020, recognizing its outstanding and creatively ingenious design that authentically captures the experience and resourcefulness of the winter navel orange.
