Tear and Discover: A Revolutionary Take on Symbolic Consumption

Mysterious Designer presents "Tear and Discover," a groundbreaking furniture collection challenging the norms of symbolic consumption. The collection, including a speaker, floor lamp, clock, and fan, is covered in leather, symbolizing the goods' symbolic value, while the functional components inside represent their use-value. This innovative design emphasizes the contradiction between sign and function in product consumption through a destructive interaction, allowing users to liberate the honest function by "cutting" the symbolic cover.

The collection, realized using leather wet shaping craft, features a strong visual tension between leather surfaces and stainless steel support. The products are made of 1.5mm whole vegetable-tanned leather, shaped by hand to achieve soft curves and an organic sense. The unique design challenges the user to interact destructively, arousing thoughts about consumption and the relationship between signs and functions.

Starting in November 2020 and completed in 2021 in Shanghai, the collection will be exhibited in June. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in Fine Arts and Art Installation Design in 2022, recognizing its ingenious approach to incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology. Mysterious Designer's "Tear and Discover" is set to revolutionize the furniture industry with its thought-provoking take on symbolic consumption.
