Harbin Institute of Technology, Shenzhen Unveils Innovative Solution to Tackle Food Waste

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Food Guardian: Revolutionizing Food Management with Gamification

Harbin Institute of Technology, Shenzhen introduces Food Guardian, a groundbreaking mobile application designed to combat the global issue of food waste. With over a trillion dollars wasted annually, Food Guardian aims to raise awareness and reduce food waste through real-time monitoring and gamification.

Food Guardian empowers users to track and manage their food consumption, encouraging responsible purchasing and facilitating the storage of leftovers in shared fridges through app reminders. Additionally, the app facilitates surplus food recycling in collaboration with food suppliers and relevant organizations.

This innovative solution was developed for the iOS system and boasts unique features such as interface design, gamification, and a focus on user experience and sustainability.

Yuyao Fan, a student, and Huicong Hu, a faculty member, led the design team in creating Food Guardian. The app's interactive modules include portion recording, food calendar, shopping list, leftovers contest, food storage, food donation, and food wizard, offering a comprehensive approach to food management.

The development process involved extensive research, including literature reviews and in-depth user interviews, to understand the complexities of food waste and user behaviors. Overcoming technical challenges, the team successfully integrated real-time food weight detection and monitoring, enhancing the app's functionality and impact.

Recognizing its innovation and practicality, Food Guardian was honored with the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in Mobile Technologies, Applications, and Software Design in 2022. This accolade signifies the app's commitment to professional and industrial standards, emphasizing practicality, innovation, and positive societal impact.
