Martin Reznik's captivating furniture illustration series, "Before the Midnight Hour," draws inspiration from comics and classic French noir cinema, breaking conventions with its narrative approach and moody aesthetic.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Martin Reznik's "Before the Midnight Hour" is a series of black and white illustrations commissioned by furniture designer Marc Krusin for promotional use on his website and social media channels, featuring his prominent furniture designs for Knoll and Desalto. The project brings a narrative to the scenes, using exaggerated perspective and a film noir aesthetic, adding an element of mystery and suspense with the lack of human presence and scattered objects. The protagonist is revealed in a surprise ending, captivating viewers with its unconventional approach to furniture illustration.
Each illustration was drawn in pen and ink on paper, then digitally redrawn using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop to construct the furniture and interiors accurately. The images were rendered using black only to recreate the film noir aesthetic. The illustrations, primarily used in a digital format online, were also designed with art print production in mind, with each square illustration drawn on a 500 x 500mm digital canvas. The images were later combined into a large poster (500 x 700mm) and reproduced as a limited edition screen print.
The series was initially published on Instagram and LinkedIn starting February 2021 and remains active. The hero banners on the client's website run for about 8 months, nearly till the end of 2021. The project received the prestigious Golden A' Design Award in 2022, recognizing its marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creation that reflects the designer's prodigy and wisdom.
