Whirlpool: A Revolutionary Wheel Hub Designed to Cool Brake Discs

WEIWEI ZHANG, the dean of Product Design at Changshu Institute of Technology, has unveiled Whirlpool, a groundbreaking wheel hub designed to cool brake discs during high-speed braking. Inspired by aircraft propellers, this titanium alloy wheel hub features a unique air diversion function, efficiently dissipating heat and extending the life of brake discs.

Conventional wheels lack the cooling function, making Whirlpool a game-changer in automotive safety and performance. The propeller-like spokes draw in air at high speeds, effectively cooling the brake discs and mitigating the heat generated during braking, ultimately contributing to the longevity of brake components.

Utilizing advanced pouring and CNC processes, the Whirlpool wheel hub measures 432mm in width, 203mm in depth, and 432mm in height. The project, initiated in October 2022 and completed in December 2022 in Changshu, China, involved extensive research and testing to overcome technical challenges related to fluid mechanics and high-speed air vortex cooling.

WEIWEI ZHANG's innovative design has been recognized with the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award in the Vehicle Parts, Auto Accessories, and Care Products category in 2023. This accolade celebrates the incorporation of best practices in art, science, design, and technology, underscoring the wheel hub's significant contribution to improving automotive safety and performance.
