Speech Bubbie: Redefining Typeface Design

Speech Bubbie is a groundbreaking type design concept that draws inspiration from the graphic conventions commonly found in manga books during dialogues. By fusing the emotive nature of fonts with the visual elements of comic book dialogues, xu han min has created a truly unique and innovative typeface.

The design process involved borrowing the form of comic book speech bubbles to reformulate the structure of alphabets and Chinese characters. This resulted in strokes being simplified into generic forms of speech bubbles while still retaining the readability of the characters, offering a fresh perspective on traditional type design.

Utilizing Adobe Illustrator and hand-drawn drafts, the Speech Bubbie type design is a testament to creativity and technical prowess. The variable size specifications further enhance its adaptability and usability across various platforms and mediums.

From its inception in Shenyang in 2012 to its completion in Shenzhen in 2021, Speech Bubbie represents a culmination of extensive research and creative exploration. The design seamlessly integrates figurative graphics into font strokes, overcoming the challenges of recognition and conveying conceptual graphics within a typographic context.

Recognized for its ingenuity, Speech Bubbie was honored with the Bronze A' Design Award in 2023, showcasing its significant contribution to the field of graphics, illustration, and visual communication design.
