Alma Kamal's Stet project, a groundbreaking approach to book design, challenges traditional reading habits and aims to reshape the future of print.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Alma Kamal's Stet project is a revolutionary approach to book design that challenges traditional reading habits and aims to reshape the future of print. Inspired by social psychology books and humanities, Stet seeks to bridge the gap between the static design of printed books and the evolving reading habits shaped by the internet. The project, which began in 2017 and concluded in December 2018 in San Francisco, introduces new forms of printed books to encourage more people to engage with tactile reading, particularly focusing on important subjects like humanities.
Stet's unique properties lie in its innovative response to the changing landscape of reading. The project introduces redesigned books, promotional booklets, educational booklets, a website, and a biannual publication, all meticulously crafted using Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Wix. The materials were printed on Mohawk paper, with various binding techniques employed to enhance the reader's experience.
One of the key challenges overcome in the Stet project was the conceptualization of non-linear and experimental book formats. By dividing content into different levels of reading, incorporating side information within the text, and reimagining the structure of the book, Stet offers readers a dynamic and engaging narrative experience. The project also includes a series of educational booklets aimed at providing valuable insights to beginner graphic design students and self-publishers.
Alma Kamal, the creative director and graphic designer behind Stet, brings over 13 years of experience in the design industry, with a strong passion for print. Her work has been recognized with prestigious awards, including the Silver A' Design Award in 2021 for Print and Published Media Design. Through Stet, Kamal aims to push the boundaries of what a book can be as an object, offering a new way forward in book design to align with evolving reading habits.
