YouMap: Bridging the Gap Between Social Media and Maps

YouMap, designed by Jakub Skupień and his team, is a revolutionary social media map app that aims to address the limitations of traditional social feeds. Inspired by the need to address the shortcomings of existing social media platforms following the Black Lives Matter protest in Baltimore, Maryland, YouMap provides a unique solution to better utilize information from the human crowd to share useful insights and information to others. Unlike most social networks that prioritize popularity, YouMap focuses on the individual on the ground with the information you need, utilizing a patented visualization system to display information ephemerally and track fast-moving events. The app is currently available exclusively on the iOS platform.

One of the key challenges overcome in the development of YouMap was the need to display thousands of posts without overcrowding the interface. The app's content blocks structure human data, allowing users to share their maps with others or join already created maps, where they can add new content. Users have control over how information is shared on the maps by using configurable fields, such as value sliders, star ratings, and multi-select options. The app also features a series of interactions that result in a tailored experience, facilitating both fun exploration and live reporting.

With four approved patents, YouMap reflects considerable design challenges, aiming to bring value from unstructured data locked in the human crowd. The app's unique approach to structuring human data and displaying important posts at a higher zoom level provides a 30,000-foot view of our human world, overcoming the limitations of traditional social feeds. YouMap is a one-of-a-kind experience for creators and communities, offering a new way to create a map of important moments in their lives by marking places or events and sharing them with others.
