Moon and Tea Mid Autumn: Sustainable Gift Box Packaging Design

Chenxiang Xi's Moon and Tea Mid Autumn gift box packaging design encapsulates the spirit of the traditional Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival, blending elegance and functionality. The bamboo box and white porcelain tea plate house moon cakes with local colored rice and Pu-erh tea, embodying the festival's cultural significance. Upon opening, the box and porcelain cover transform into a tea tray, while the box doubles as a soft lamp, creating a serene ambiance for enjoying tea and moon-watching.

The design's sustainable construction, utilizing natural materials such as bamboo, ceramics, and wheat straw, aligns with eco-friendly principles. Each component serves a distinct purpose, with the outermost layer functioning as a ceramic tea tray, treated with a slow-flow water process to ensure longevity and promote continuous use.

Measuring 24.5cm x 8.5cm x 30cm, the gift box's technical specifications highlight its thoughtful and practical design, while the reusability of its elements adds to its appeal. The project, led by Chenxiang Xi and Chenling Zhang, commenced in August 2021 and concluded in October 2021 in Shanghai, China.

The design's innovative approach stems from extensive research, aiming to transform packaging from single-use items to sustainable, value-added solutions. By addressing consumer perceptions and behaviors through surveys and interviews, the design team discovered that added functionality and reusability significantly impact consumer preferences, potentially reducing waste and promoting sustainable packaging practices.

Chenxiang Xi's Moon and Tea Mid Autumn design overcame creative, technical, and production challenges, ultimately earning the prestigious Golden A' Design Award in 2023. This accolade recognizes the design's exceptional contribution to art, science, and technology, reflecting the designer's prodigy and wisdom in creating trendsetting, impactful products.
