Preserving Malaysia's Cultural Heritage Through Coffee Packaging

Renowned designer Shawn Goh Chin Siang introduces 'The Taste of Heritage' instant coffee, a unique representation of Malaysia's diverse cultural tapestry. The packaging showcases the vanishing local heritage through intricate designs, integrating the art and culture of the three main ethnic groups in Malaysia. Each flavor is adorned with distinct cultural symbols, such as Peking Opera, peacocks, and Wayang kulit, representing Chinese, Indian, and Malay cultures, respectively.

Goh's innovative approach ties in the exclusive Malaysian batik pattern, creating a visually stunning and culturally rich packaging. The project, realized using aluminum foil matt and glossy to preserve the aroma and protect from direct sunlight, is a collaboration with the Pulau Langkawi Tourism Bureau, aiming to boost local tourism through international market exposure.

Beginning in June 2020 and completed in August 2020, the project was exhibited in Malaysia in the first quarter of 2021. Goh's extensive research into the vanishing cultural heritages of Malaysia's ethnic groups led to the creation of this exceptional product, which has been recognized with the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in 2021.
