Ryumei Fujiki and Yukiko Sato Unveil the Second Version of Aqua Scape, a Whole Plastic Architecture
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Ryumei Fujiki and Yukiko Sato present the second version of Aqua Scape, a groundbreaking Whole Plastic Architecture inspired by jellyfish and small shrimp. This innovative design, known as the Orangery version, features a double skin system, offering a transparent soft shell that sets it apart from its predecessor. The structure, realized using origami techniques, is made entirely of plastic materials, with an outer skin of 2mm thick polycarbonate and an inner skin of net structural cushion made of tubular polyethylene fiber. The design, which measures 1.5m in width, 1.5m in height, and 4m in length, offers a unique space for children, allowing only them to enter and interact with the installation.
The project, located at the Beam Gallery (The Orangery) in Wakefield, England, UK, was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in 2022, recognizing its outstanding expertise, innovation, and remarkable level of excellence. The design team, including Ryumei Fujiki, Yukiko Sato, and other members, overcame numerous creative, technical, and research challenges to bring this unique concept to life. The Orangery version of Aqua Scape not only showcases the designers' mastery of form resistance structure and origami techniques but also introduces a new approach to creating soft and boneless architecture using only plastic materials.
