Metamorphosis: A Butterfly Cocoon Inspired Yoga Shala Building

Constantinos Yanniotis unveils "Metamorphosis," a stunning Yoga Shala Building in Central Portugal, designed to reflect the transformative journey of a butterfly cocoon. The building program includes a new Yoga Shala with an Atrium, Xeriscape Garden islands, a Stone Teahouse, and Cultivation Levels, offering a unique and sustainable space for yoga practice and spiritual connection.

The form of the new Yoga Shala was meticulously crafted through the geometric transformations of the butterfly cocoon model. The complex geometry gently envelops the space, providing a serene and harmonious environment for yoga practice and spiritual growth. The structure consists of primary and secondary structural wood contour beams, a horizontal perimetric bench-like shelf, and a skin comprised of layers of plywood sheets, thermal insulation, and structured titanium panels.

Located in a breathtaking region of central Portugal, the "Metamorphosis" project started in October 2020 and was completed in December 2020. This innovative design represents the Bureau's participation in an International Architecture Competition Call, aiming to enhance the existing Yoga Retreat Center with an additional Yoga Shala space.
