Singaporean Artist Chan Hwee Chong Unveils Immersive Rattan Sculpture Series
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Singaporean artist Chan Hwee Chong has unveiled a thought-provoking series of rattan sculptures titled "Good Boy Good Girl," inspired by the traditional use of the cane for discipline in Singaporean culture. Each sculpture, standing at approximately 1.4m tall, embodies the immobilizing grip of societal forces on children in a fast-paced environment, constructed in cane to reinforce rigidity of both body and mind.
The series, showcased at prestigious art events such as Spikes Asia and Tokyo Designers Week, explores the dichotomy of discipline and societal pressures faced by children. Chong's innovative realization technology involves rattan woven over a metal structure, creating a visually striking and emotionally evocative experience for viewers.
Recipient of the Iron A' Design Award in Fine Arts and Art Installation Design in 2022, "Good Boy Good Girl" has been recognized for its well-designed, practical, and innovative approach that integrates industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, contributing to a better world.
