Renowned designer Lara Wilkin presents a series of information graphics titled "Lost Species" to educate and raise awareness about extinction history and sustainability.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Lara Wilkin's "Lost Species" is a series of information graphics designed to educate the public about extinction history and promote sustainability. The graphics are part of the Lazarus Effect campaign, aiming to raise awareness of human influences on nature and the potential for reversing extinction. The three illustrations cover The Six Major Mass Extinctions, Death Watch of the Species, and local Fern Plants and Flowering Plants based on the Rote Liste, 2018.
Wilkin's unique approach to these illustrations lies in their rich detail and the use of black and white vector graphics, making them suitable for various museum installations. The visuals are designed to be large-format and easily comprehensible for all viewers, allowing them to discover more details over time.
Developed to accompany the Lazarus Effect campaign, the graphics serve as a basis for introducing the campaign's theme. Wilkin's meticulous research across anthropological, biological, and paleontological literature, along with support from natural history museums, ensures the accuracy and depth of the information presented.
The project commenced in May 2020 and was realized using a drawn layout and Adobe Illustrator, with a focus on trackpad usage. The technical specifications of the original sizes for the illustrations are as follows: Ferns and Flowering Plants (16045â/â32000), The Six Major Mass Extinctions (32000â/â10733), and Death Clock of Species (12669â/â12319).
Wilkin's work has been recognized with the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in 2021, highlighting the exceptional expertise and innovation demonstrated in the "Lost Species" education illustrations. The award acknowledges the outstanding technical characteristics and artistic skill showcased in the designs, which aim to evoke positive emotions and wonder in viewers.
