FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Poster Design Blending Lacquer Art with Oil Painting

The "Darkness and Light" poster design by Chihiro Otsuki is a captivating blend of lacquer art and oil painting, illustrating the integration of classical and modern styles. This unique design is the result of a residency program conducted by the National Institute of Japanese Literature, aiming to bring classical books and art to the public. The poster was awarded Bronze in A' Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design Award in 2024, recognizing its outstanding creativity and contribution to the arts.

The poster, measuring 515mm in width and 728mm in height, was created using UV offset printing with vegetable ink on Forest Stewardship Council-certified paper. It serves as a multidimensional representation of classical texts and artworks, reflecting a high level of consideration for the environment. The design captures the essence of classical themes interpreted by two artists, highlighting the deep influence of traditional culture in their artistic expression.

Launched in 2017, the project aimed to open up the collection of classical books and the network of specialists cultivated by the National Institute of Japanese Literature to non-researchers. The exhibition, held for one week from January 11 to January 17, invited two artists to contemplate ancient stories and themes, resulting in the creation of this exceptional poster design.
