QiRui Ma's Lighthouse of Wishes

The Lighthouse of Wishes, an art installation by QiRui Ma, stands as a beacon of community collaboration and artistic expression, located on the picturesque coastline of Aranya Community, Beidaihe. Selected as the "best new years eve architectural proposal" by the community's residents, this 12-meter-tall structure was inaugurated on December 31, 2022, and is set to illuminate the arrival of 2023 with a unique interactive experience.

Constructed using polycarbonate sheets for its facade, the Lighthouse of Wishes exhibits a translucent and interactive nature, allowing natural light to create extraordinary visual experiences. The structure's unique design and lightweight construction strategies enable it to stand tall and welcome visitors, showcasing 204 unique "wishes" at night, while blending seamlessly into its surroundings during the day.

Despite facing budget constraints and technical challenges, including the need to withstand Pacific winter sea breezes without damaging the beach, the design team overcame these obstacles to create a ceremonial lighthouse that embodies the eternal spirituality of Aranya's philosophy. The Lighthouse of Wishes is a testament to the power of community participation and the use of recyclable, environmentally friendly materials in architectural practice.
