BioInspired Robotics & Design Laboratory Unveils Bloom, a Bio-Inspired Soft Robotic Gripper
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The BioInspired Robotics & Design Laboratory at the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) introduces Bloom, a bio-inspired, pneumatically actuated, shape morphing soft robotic gripper. Inspired by the dexterity of the human hand and the blooming of the Rosa gallica, Bloom offers unparalleled capabilities in grasping and manipulation tasks.
Bloom is a game-changer in the field of robotics, featuring passive retractable nails, bi-directional foldable petals, and a flexible palm, allowing for rapid workspace reconfigurability. This innovation enables Bloom to perform assembly tasks with varying subtasks, a feat previously unattainable with conventional grippers.
Utilizing a combination of design optimization using FEA, 3D printing, silicone molding, and casting, Bloom sets new standards in soft robotics. With dimensions of 115 x 115 x 152mm, Bloom is a testament to the cutting-edge advancements in soft robotics, material science, and bio-inspired design.
Our group at the BioInspired Robotics & Design Laboratory is dedicated to pioneering new approaches in robot design and fabrication. Our multidisciplinary work focuses on bio-inspired design, modeling, and advanced fabrication processes. By combining theoretical modeling with laboratory experiments, we aim to create simple and elegant robot mechanisms that interact seamlessly with different environments.
