Stepan Pianykh's Phoresy Pack Redefines Backpack Design with Innovative Materials and Computational Principles

Stepan Pianykh introduces the Phoresy Pack, an ergonomic backpack design based on a unique flexible tessellated material. Crafted from a single sheet of precisely CNC-milled and folded genuine leather, the Phoresy Pack's structure expands and shrinks flat based on the volume of its contents. Drawing inspiration from applied mathematicians and modern architects, this project explores applications of parametric design principles in the fields of fashion and industrial design.
The Phoresy Pack is crafted from various types of natural cowhide leather, incorporating a separate layer of Spandex to enable the bag to fold flat when not filled. The backpack features traditional leather-working techniques and accessories crafted from CNC-milled aluminum, showcasing a blend of innovative materials and craftsmanship.
This backpack is of average size, with approximate dimensions of 500 x 320 x 200 mm, offering a total volume of 15 liters. Despite its transformative properties, the backpack operates in a straightforward manner, featuring a single large compartment that naturally expands and contracts to accommodate the volume of its contents.
Initiated in February 2015 as Stepan's degree thesis, the Phoresy Pack made its debut at the British Higher School of Art and Design's End of the Year exhibition. Since then, it has gained recognition through participation in multiple exhibitions and printed features, shaping societal perspectives on technology and craftsmanship in design.
