Pikapoo, designed by Yihan Luo and Matt Zheng, has been honored with the Iron A' Robotics, Automaton and Automation Design Award 2025 for its innovative robotic dog waste pick-up and composting solution, developed from 2019 to 2024 between Beijing and Los Angeles, addressing environmental and public health challenges for dog owners worldwide.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Pikapoo is a groundbreaking solution that reimagines dog waste management through robotics and smart composting. Developed by Yihan Luo and Matt Zheng, Pikapoo consists of the PooBot, an autonomous robot that locates and collects dog waste, and the PooBase, a composting unit that transforms collected waste into organic fertilizer. The entire process is seamlessly managed through a user-friendly mobile app, making responsible pet ownership easier and more accessible for people of all ages and abilities.
The inspiration for Pikapoo arose from the widespread issue of uncollected dog waste, which not only creates unpleasant public spaces but also poses significant environmental risks. Research conducted by the design team revealed that up to 50% of dog owners neglect cleanup in secluded areas, often due to inconvenience or misconceptions about the impact of dog feces. Pikapoo addresses these challenges by automating the collection process and introducing an eco-friendly composting system, ensuring that waste is efficiently removed and repurposed to enrich soil rather than pollute it.
Technologically, Pikapoo leverages advanced olfactory and image recognition to enable the PooBot to accurately detect and collect waste. Once collected, a sample is reserved for health monitoring and delivered to veterinarians, while the remainder is transported to the PooBase. There, a catalyzer with natural microorganisms accelerates decomposition, eliminates odors, and neutralizes pathogens, producing nutrient-rich fertilizer. This fertilizer is then distributed to the surrounding soil or returned to the PooBot for even lawn coverage. Pikapoo's thoughtful design and research-driven approach have earned it the Iron A' Design Award, recognizing its contribution to sustainability, public health, and user convenience.
