"24 Solar Terms And Gods": Bridging Ancient Mythology and Modern Design with Interactive Illustrations

"24 Solar Terms And Gods" is a groundbreaking graphic design series by Chen Zhao and the Zhejiang FirstDot Design team, awarded Silver at the 2025 A' Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design Awards. Drawing inspiration from the mythological figures found in ancient Chinese classics such as the "Classic of Mountains and Seas," the project transforms folkloric imagery into contemporary art. Each illustration reinterprets a deity associated with one of the 24 solar terms, blending traditional symbolism with modern aesthetics to create a unique visual narrative that celebrates China's rich seasonal heritage.

The series stands out for its meticulous craftsmanship, harmonious color palettes, and the innovative use of petroglyph-inspired forms. By balancing intricate details with vivid hues, the illustrations evoke both the authenticity of Stone Age art and the allure of mythological storytelling. Each artwork features a QR code, inviting viewers to explore a dedicated website filled with detailed explanations of the solar terms, deity stories, and agricultural wisdom. This interactive approach bridges the gap between physical and digital experiences, making traditional culture accessible and engaging for contemporary audiences.

Developed in China since 2021, the project required extensive research into the cultural and astronomical significance of the 24 solar terms. The design team overcame creative challenges by integrating hybrid divine figures-combining human, animal, and mythological traits-into a cohesive modern style. The result is a collection that not only preserves the essence of ancient traditions but also revitalizes them for a new generation. The project's recognition with the Silver A' Design Award underscores its technical excellence, artistic innovation, and contribution to cultural heritage transmission.
