Belmondo Suites: Merging Historical Preservation with Modern Hospitality in the Heart of Antalya

Belmondo Suites, designed by Hilal Ustun Caner, officially opened its doors in November 2024, marking a new chapter for Antalya's storied Kaleici district. The project transforms four historic mansions into a boutique hotel featuring 30 uniquely crafted rooms, two restaurants, a wine house, and a patisserie. Rooted in a deep respect for the area's layered heritage, Belmondo Suites seamlessly integrates original architectural elements with modern comforts, offering guests an immersive experience that bridges past and present. The first phase, completed in October 2024, introduced 16 rooms and the Belforno Italian Restaurant, setting a new standard for adaptive reuse in hospitality design.

Inspired by the rich cultural tapestry of Kaleici, Caner adopted a palimpsest approach-preserving the memory of each space while introducing contemporary elegance. The design process involved meticulous restoration techniques, retaining original wooden floors, slatted ceilings, and stone walls, while incorporating handcrafted furniture and bespoke materials. The result is a harmonious blend of neo-classical elegance, modern rustic warmth, and Scandinavian simplicity, with every detail curated to enhance tactile depth and comfort. This thoughtful balance of craftsmanship and innovation distinguishes Belmondo Suites from conventional hospitality projects, creating a timeless environment that honors the district's unique identity.

Belmondo Suites' realization was guided by extensive research, including site analysis, archival studies of traditional Turkish houses, and interviews with former residents. The project overcame significant challenges, from navigating structural and legal constraints to developing custom materials and layouts that reflect the character of each mansion. By fostering continuity between open, semi-open, and enclosed spaces, the hotel encourages social interaction and cultural engagement, positioning itself as a vibrant center of hospitality and gastronomy. Recognized with the Silver A' Design Award 2025, Belmondo Suites stands as a model for sustainable, history-conscious design, setting a benchmark for future adaptive reuse projects in Turkey and beyond.
