Threaded Edition 21: Te Po and Te Ao Marama, designed by Kyra Clarke and launched in Auckland, New Zealand, has been awarded Silver in the 2025 A' Print and Published Media Design Award for its groundbreaking integration of Te Ao Maori worldviews, augmented reality, and sonic artistry, reflecting on connection and transformation in the wake of Covid-19.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Threaded Edition 21: Te Po and Te Ao Marama, directed by Kyra Clarke, stands as a unique publication that fuses traditional Maori perspectives with cutting-edge design technology. Developed in response to the profound impacts of Covid-19, the project invited practitioners to reflect on social separation and cultural disconnection, ultimately celebrating the growth and reconnection that emerged from periods of isolation. The publication's conceptual framework is deeply rooted in tikanga Maori and matauranga Maori kawa, ensuring authenticity and cultural integrity throughout its design and content.
The 150-page publication features a Z-fold cover symbolizing the transition from darkness (Te Po) to light (Te Ao Marama), visually and physically binding these realms. Its structure draws inspiration from the waiata 'Ko te Pu', and the use of color, motif, and materiality signifies the metamorphosis of time and space. Embedded QR codes unlock augmented reality and sonic experiences, transforming the printed page into an immersive, interactive journey that bridges the physical and digital worlds. This innovative approach allows readers to engage with Maori stories and philosophies in a multi-layered, sensory-rich format.
Threaded Ed.21's collaborative creation involved a diverse team of designers, artists, and contributors from Aotearoa and abroad, reflecting a convergence of cultures and practices. The project's realization required overcoming technical and creative challenges, particularly in synthesizing visual, textual, and AR sonic elements to communicate complex Maori cultural concepts. Recognized with a Silver A' Design Award in 2025, the publication exemplifies excellence in both artistic vision and technical execution, setting a new standard for culturally engaged, practitioner-focused design publications.
