Commi Board: Award-Winning Modular Prototyping Platform for Mobile Devices

Commi Board, designed by Kevin Yang, has been recognized with the Iron A' Education, Teaching Aid and Training Content Design Award 2025 for its innovative approach to electronics prototyping. Developed as a student project at the Royal College of Art in London, Commi Board addresses the need for accessible, hands-on learning by transforming smartphones into powerful prototyping platforms. The device allows users to design, test, and run electronic circuits directly on the back of their mobile device, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application.

Unlike traditional breadboards and prototyping tools, Commi Board features a modular design and seamless app integration, enabling real-time circuit simulation and code validation through USB-C or Bluetooth connectivity. The platform supports multiple programming methods, including AI-driven natural language processing, visual block-based coding, and a full integrated development environment (IDE). Its cloud-based project sharing and online component libraries foster a collaborative community, making it suitable for educators, students, and tech enthusiasts alike.

Commi Board's development was guided by extensive research into human-centered design and accessibility, with a focus on simplifying PCB schematics and testing for mobile-first users. Overcoming challenges in compact PCB integration and reliable GPIO communication, the project leveraged open-source resources and user feedback to create a robust, scalable solution. The Iron A' Design Award recognizes Commi Board's contribution to educational technology, highlighting its potential to democratize electronics prototyping and inspire the next generation of innovators.
