Award-Winning Poster Blends Dunhuang Murals and 24 Solar Terms to Reimagine Chinese Cultural Heritage

The "Time And Seasons Of Dunhuang" poster project, designed by Dapeng Zhang, stands at the forefront of cultural innovation by seamlessly merging the visual language of Dunhuang's ancient murals with the agricultural themes of China's 24 solar terms. Utilizing digital reconstruction of mineral pigment colors and traditional patterns, Zhang's work reinterprets centuries-old aesthetics with a modern sensibility, making traditional culture accessible and engaging for contemporary audiences. The project was initiated in Dunhuang in November 2023, completed in October 2024, and showcased at Zhejiang Sci-Tech University in November 2024, drawing widespread attention for its creative approach to heritage preservation.

Through meticulous research, including on-site investigations at the Mogao Grottoes, literature reviews, and public feedback via questionnaires, Zhang developed a design that not only visually captivates but also communicates the philosophical and agricultural significance of each solar term. The poster's innovative use of contemporary typography, combined with reconstructed Dunhuang color systems and brushstroke rhythms, creates a dynamic interaction between viewers and the cultural narratives embedded in the artwork. Its multidimensional strategy-encompassing visual magnetism, storytelling, emotional resonance, and social media propagation-has resulted in broad dissemination and sparked enthusiastic public dialogue about Dunhuang and the solar terms.
