He Xiayun's "Moon Trace" art installation, launched in October 2024 at the Shanghai International Light and Shadow Festival, merges Eastern and Western lunar symbolism with dragon motifs to mark the 60th anniversary of China-France diplomatic relations, and has been honored with the Silver A' Design Award for its innovative blend of cultural heritage, technology, and sustainability.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
"Moon Trace," designed by He Xiayun and an international team, debuted in Shanghai as a highlight of the inaugural Shanghai International Light and Shadow Festival in October 2024. The installation draws inspiration from the rich cultural heritages of China and France, focusing on the symbolism of lunar phases and the dragon, which represent unity, hope, strength, and wisdom in both cultures. The project commemorates the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations, serving as a visual metaphor for their enduring friendship and shared aspirations.
The installation stands out for its innovative fusion of Eastern full moon and Western crescent moon imagery, harmoniously integrated with dragon motifs. Advanced lighting, projection, and smoke effects interact with recycled steel structures, creating a surreal tunnel that immerses viewers in a dynamic interplay of light and shadow. The modular, eco-friendly design allows for efficient assembly, adaptability to various exhibition scenarios, and a unique sensory experience that changes based on audience movement and perspective.
Overcoming technical and environmental challenges, the team prioritized sustainability by using recyclable materials and modular construction. Extensive research and creative collaboration resulted in an artwork that not only celebrates the cultural depths of both nations but also pushes the boundaries of public art and environmental responsibility. "Moon Trace" has been permanently collected for exhibition in Shanghai, with preparations underway for a re-exhibition in France, further strengthening cross-cultural dialogue through art.
