Whispers of Ink: Award-Winning Fragrance Packaging Inspired by Jiangnan's Artistic Legacy

Whispers of Ink, designed by Suzhou SoFeng Design Co.,Ltd., is a fragrance packaging series that has captured international acclaim by winning the Golden A' Packaging Design Award in 2025. The collection, which includes scented candles, travel incense sticks, and plaster diffuser stones, draws inspiration from the serene landscapes and classical gardens of Jiangnan, China. Each piece is adorned with hand-drawn vertical line illustrations depicting delicate floral scenes, finished with a grass green enamel glaze that evokes the luster of jade and the transparency of glass.

The packaging design stands out for its innovative integration of the "magnolia book" motif, where magnolia branches and leaves from Jiangnan gardens are artistically transformed into the shape of an open book page. This unique approach creates an immersive "book with fragrance" experience, blending the sensory pleasure of scent with the visual poetry of traditional Chinese art. The series is meticulously crafted using spot color printing and letterpress embossing, ensuring both tactile and visual sophistication.

A collaborative effort involving creative director Sha Feng and art director Jiayi Lu, Whispers of Ink also reflects a commitment to cultural preservation. The project partnered with the historic Chinese brand Qiaojiayao and Shanxi Province's intangible cultural heritage "Fahua" ceramic craftsmanship, addressing the challenge of revitalizing traditional techniques for contemporary audiences. The design process required extensive research and multiple rounds of manual adjustment to perfect the intricate linework and achieve a harmonious presentation that resonates with both heritage and modern sensibilities.

The Whispers of Ink fragrance series not only elevates the art of aromatherapy packaging but also serves as a bridge between past and present, offering consumers a multisensory journey rooted in the rich cultural tapestry of Jiangnan. Its recognition by the A' Design Award underscores the project's excellence in advancing art, design, and the appreciation of intangible cultural heritage on a global stage.
