FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

"Original by Nature" Showcases the Fusion of Upcycled Glass, Urban Agriculture, and Digital Art in Istanbul

"Original by Nature" is a groundbreaking art installation by Egemen Kemal Vurusan that reimagines the lifecycle of discarded glass bottles by transforming them into amorphous, sculptural vessels supporting hydroponic plant growth. Inspired by the purity and continuity of natural spring waters, the project was unveiled at Akaretler Sıraevler in Besiktas, Istanbul, from March 1-22, 2022. This installation not only highlights the potential of upcycled materials but also serves as a tangible demonstration of how art, sustainability, and technology can harmoniously intersect in urban environments.

The installation's modular units, each measuring 5000 mm by 2000 mm by 3500 mm, are crafted through advanced glass blowing and upcycling techniques, including high-temperature annealing and mold-based reshaping. These processes allow the glass to take on fluid, organic forms reminiscent of moving water. Integrated hydroponic systems within the glass structures provide sensor-controlled irrigation, while purple UV lighting enhances photosynthesis, ensuring optimal plant growth. The result is a visually immersive and interactive experience where visitors witness the dynamic interplay between water, plants, and upcycled glass.

Vurusan's work stands out for its innovative use of recycled materials, merging digital art and sustainable design principles to create an installation that is both functional and aesthetically compelling. Overcoming technical challenges such as maintaining structural integrity while achieving artistic fluidity, the project demonstrates the adaptability of glass and the potential for eco-friendly innovation in urban agriculture. "Original by Nature" not only raises awareness about the possibilities of glass upcycling but also contributes to the ongoing conversation around sustainability and the future of urban living. The project's recognition with the Iron A' Fine Arts and Art Installation Design Award 2025 further affirms its impact and significance in the fields of art and environmental design.
