"Rhythm" Sculpture Installation Series: Dance Movement Translated into Contemporary Cherry Wood Art

Zhuoyun Xiao's "Rhythm" is a compelling exploration of movement, emotion, and visual rhythm, realized through a series of five cherry wood sculptures. Drawing inspiration from the exaggerated gestures of clowns in dance, Xiao meticulously researched how to translate the fleeting energy of performance into static forms without losing their vitality. The result is a set of sculptures ranging from 150mm to 350mm in height, each piece uniquely shaped to embody a distinct moment of dance, yet harmoniously arranged to create a sequential visual cadence.

The installation employs a striking palette of black, white, and red, applied with specialized wood treatments to accentuate transitional points and guide the viewer's eye through the sequence. Each sculpture's placement and varying height are carefully calculated to evoke a sense of motion, encouraging viewers to move around the installation and mentally reconstruct the dance. The spatial relationships between the pieces amplify the illusion of dynamic movement, making the static forms appear almost animated.

"Rhythm" stands out for its innovative fusion of traditional and modern artistic languages. Xiao's use of cherry wood, hand-polished and sustainably sourced, reflects a commitment to both craftsmanship and environmental responsibility. The project's research-driven approach integrates grotesque aesthetics, digital media analysis of body movement, and deconstruction methodologies, resulting in a body of work that bridges commedia dell'arte heritage with contemporary sculptural abstraction. The Iron A' Design Award recognizes "Rhythm" not only for its technical excellence and creative vision but also for its contribution to expanding the possibilities of public space art installations.
