Yitong Du and team have completed the transformation of Kherson Park in Kent, Washington, opening in May 2023 as a sustainable, interactive landscape that honors the city's lunar rover history while inspiring future generations in science and technology through hands-on exhibits and augmented reality experiences.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Kherson Park, designed by Yitong Du in collaboration with Jim Brennan, Drew Coombs, and Tanja Wilcox, officially opened to the public in May 2023 in Kent, WA, following a four-year redevelopment. The park stands as a tribute to the city's pivotal role in the Apollo lunar missions, specifically honoring the lunar rovers engineered by Boeing in the late 1960s. The revitalized park offers a unique blend of historical commemoration, STEM education, and sustainable landscape design, making it a vibrant destination for families, students, and visitors.
Spanning 0.44 acres, Kherson Park features over 93% green landscaping and permeable paving, reducing environmental impact while providing ample open space. Central to the park's design are interactive exhibits, including a replica lunar rover, astronaut sculptures, and a mission control panel, all enhanced by augmented reality experiences that bring space exploration to life. The park's smart lighting and eco-friendly materials further reinforce its commitment to sustainability, while nighttime programming and educational workshops foster ongoing community engagement.
The project's realization involved extensive historical research, community input, and collaboration with aerospace historians, educators, and local engineers. Overcoming challenges such as balancing historical authenticity with modern playability and integrating advanced technology, the design team created a cost-effective, accessible, and immersive environment. Kherson Park not only celebrates Kent's aerospace heritage but also serves as a catalyst for STEM learning, reinforcing the city's identity as a hub for innovation and inspiring the next generation of explorers and thinkers.
