"Plastic Heart" Fuses AI, NeRF Technology and LED Display to Raise Awareness of Plastic Pollution Through Art

"Plastic Heart" is a groundbreaking public LED media art installation created by SuKang You, a motion graphic designer and visual artist from Seoul, Republic of Korea. The project was first unveiled at the COEX Mall in Gangnam on December 25, 2024, as part of the Seoul Media Art Festival (SMAF 2025). The installation features a pulsating heart constructed from vibrant plastic debris, symbolizing the impact of plastic pollution on all forms of life and the planet itself. By blending festive, ornamental visuals with a sobering environmental message, "Plastic Heart" invites viewers to reflect on the consequences of reckless plastic consumption and the urgent need for sustainability.

Utilizing cutting-edge generative AI and NeRF (Neural Radiance Fields) technology, SuKang You transformed digital artwork into a striking 3D visualization. The heart's rhythmic motion and colorful composition are displayed on a large-scale anamorphic LED screen measuring 4224mm by 1944mm, ensuring an immersive experience for audiences in public spaces. The project was adapted for 14 different screen formats, maximizing accessibility and visual impact across diverse environments. Advanced post-production tools, including After Effects, were employed to refine the motion graphics and achieve seamless, high-resolution visuals suitable for expansive digital displays.

The inspiration behind "Plastic Heart" stems from the duality of plastic waste: while it poses a severe threat to ecosystems, its colorful presence can appear deceptively beautiful, much like festive ornaments. This irony is central to the installation's message, which blurs the lines between human, animal, and planetary identity. By engaging audiences with dazzling visuals set to Christmas carols before revealing the underlying environmental crisis, the artwork encourages deeper contemplation of collective responsibility. The project's innovative use of technology and compelling storytelling have earned it the Bronze A' Design Award, recognizing its contribution to art, science, and quality of life improvements.
