Cloud Ocean Design's Zhao Yunhai has transformed the 230-year-old Qitai Hall in Bishan Village, Anhui, into a vibrant cultural bookstore, blending heritage with modern needs and earning the prestigious Golden A' Cultural Heritage and Culture Industry Design Award in 2025.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Bishan Bookstore, designed by Zhao Yunhai of Cloud Ocean Design, breathes new life into the historic Qitai Hall, a Wang family shrine dating back to the Qing Dynasty. Located in Bishan Village, Yi County, Anhui, the project was completed in December 2024 and stands as a testament to the harmonious integration of traditional Huizhou architecture with contemporary cultural functions. By transforming the ancestral hall into a bookstore, the design not only preserves the building's historical essence but also redefines its role as a community hub for learning and cultural exchange.
Central to the design is the innovative use of natural materials such as wood, bamboo, and stone, which resonate with the surrounding landscape and reinforce the connection to nature. The bookcase wall, inspired by the screens in Chinese painting, utilizes a modern white rammed earth material, creating a striking visual centerpiece while ensuring the preservation of books against humidity. The layout encourages visitors to gather in the central area, fostering a sense of belonging and facilitating daily cultural activities reminiscent of the literati traditions.
The project faced significant challenges, including balancing heritage protection with the demands of modern usage and adapting to evolving community needs. Through thoughtful planning and sensitive intervention, the Bishan Bookstore avoids becoming a static exhibit and instead serves as a living cultural container. This renewal allows both locals and visitors to re-experience the ancestral hall's historical significance, ensuring that its cultural legacy endures while supporting functional and economic sustainability. The recognition by the Golden A' Design Award underscores the project's impact on advancing cultural heritage and rural revitalization in China.
