JourneyLink: Award-Winning In-Car Infotainment System Enhances Group Travel with Real-Time Multi-Vehicle Coordination

JourneyLink, developed by Yan Zeng, Ruifeng Wang, and Yuyin Sun, has been recognized with the Golden A' Design Award 2025 in the Interface, Interaction, and User Experience Design category. Created to address the challenges of coordinating multi-vehicle road trips, JourneyLink leverages advanced vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication and real-time data synchronization to deliver a safer, more connected, and enjoyable group travel experience. The project, initiated in April 2023 and completed in August 2023, was realized through extensive user research, prototyping, and iterative usability testing in Philadelphia and San Francisco.

Unlike traditional navigation apps, JourneyLink enables users to sync travel plans, share real-time locations, and communicate effortlessly across multiple vehicles. Key features include collaborative navigation, shared stops, emergency alerts, and the ability to capture and relive scenic moments together. The system's card-based user interface prioritizes accessibility and minimizes distractions, displaying notifications based on urgency to ensure driver safety. Compatible with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and embedded vehicle infotainment systems, JourneyLink supports cross-platform accessibility and reliable cloud-based data transmission for group travel efficiency.

The design team overcame significant technical and creative challenges, such as ensuring seamless V2V communication without distracting drivers and maintaining reliable data synchronization across different vehicle systems. Insights from surveys, expert interviews, and usability testing shaped a user-friendly interface that enhances group travel coordination, safety, and shared experiences. JourneyLink's innovative approach not only advances connected vehicle technology but also redefines how families and friends experience road trips together.
