Tokyo-based designer Yuko Takagi has been honored with the Silver A' Packaging Design Award 2025 for Kanade, a premium Japanese liqueur packaging that blends traditional craftsmanship, modern artistry, and global appeal through its innovative use of washi paper, calligraphy, and watercolor elements.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Kanade, the latest packaging design by Yuko Takagi, has captured international attention by winning the Silver A' Packaging Design Award in 2025. Developed over a year in Tokyo, the design draws inspiration from the liqueur's delicate, natural taste, evoking imagery of soft, flowing watercolors and the subtle harmony intrinsic to Japanese aesthetics. Takagi's approach results in packaging that not only reflects the refined flavor profile of Kanade but also bridges traditional Japanese artistry with a contemporary, global sensibility.
The packaging features custom washi paper embedded with fine glossy fibers, achieving a tactile balance between matte softness and refined shine. Each bottle is adorned with a handwritten calligraphy logo, a bespoke typeface, and watercolor paintings representing individual flavors, all meticulously crafted to highlight the artisanal quality and premium positioning of the liqueur. The inclusion of a Kanji character aligns Kanade with the House of Suntory's renowned whiskey line, reinforcing its cultural authenticity while appealing to both local and international audiences.
Takagi's design process involved extensive field research, including direct feedback from bartenders to ensure the bottle's usability and ergonomic comfort. Adjustments were made to enhance pouring ease and tactile experience, demonstrating a thoughtful integration of form and function. Overcoming challenges in material development, the team succeeded in producing original washi paper that maintains its natural texture and luster, underscoring the handcrafted essence of Kanade. The result is a packaging solution that resonates with connoisseurs and design enthusiasts alike, celebrating Japanese tradition while inviting global appreciation.
