Funny Eye Macau Sparkling, a beverage brand from Macau designed by Chunyang Wang, has been honored with the Bronze A' Packaging Design Award in 2025. The award recognizes the product's innovative approach to drink packaging, which draws inspiration from the iconic Ruins of St. Paul's and the playful gaze found in the works of Italian artist Tullio Garbari. The design stands out for its creative blend of Eastern and Western cultural elements, resulting in a fresh and visually distinctive style that captures the essence of Macau's diverse heritage.
The packaging features three unique flavors, each represented by a dopamine-inspired color palette that visually communicates the taste experience. The product names have been reimagined as visual symbols, utilizing a custom bold Chinese typeface with enlarged fonts, increased spacing, and extended character lengths. This typographic treatment makes the product name the focal point of the can, establishing a strong shelf presence in the competitive fast-moving consumer goods market.
Chunyang Wang and the design team overcame creative challenges by deconstructing the architectural elements of the Ruins of St. Paul's, extracting geometric forms from its columns and windows. These shapes were recomposed into the packaging's visual language, paying homage to Macau's architectural legacy while embracing contemporary design trends. The result is a packaging solution that not only celebrates local culture but also sets a new benchmark for beverage branding, as recognized by the prestigious A' Design Award jury.
