FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
"De Muros a Marcas," created by Paul Joshua Martinez Calderon, has been recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award 2025 in the Education, Teaching Aid, and Training Content Design category. The project, developed at Universidad San Ignacio de Loyola in Peru, redefines the relationship between street art and academic design by offering an elective course and a richly illustrated art book. Calderon's initiative aims to dispel misconceptions about graffiti, presenting it as a valuable source of inspiration and a legitimate form of visual communication within the design curriculum.
Inspired by Calderon's personal journey from viewing graffiti as vandalism to embracing its artistic and communicative power, "De Muros a Marcas" integrates practical projects, historical context, and contemporary insights. The course syllabus, approved by design professionals, guides students through the aesthetics and social relevance of street art, encouraging them to engage with urban art as a tool for addressing societal issues. The accompanying art book features hand-drawn and digital illustrations, produced using both traditional media and digital platforms like Procreate and Adobe software, providing students with a tangible resource to support their learning.
The project's development involved extensive research, including surveys and interviews with students and professionals, as well as a model class to test content effectiveness. The art book, measuring 32 by 28 centimeters, is designed for durability and visual impact, while course materials are formatted for accessibility and ease of use. Over a three-month semester, students participate in 15 sessions combining lectures, hands-on activities, and a final project, all aimed at fostering a deeper understanding of design through the lens of street art. "De Muros a Marcas" stands out for its innovative approach, overcoming skepticism about urban art and establishing a new standard for creative education in design.
