Yutong Wang's generative, pixel-inspired visual identity for HarvardXR 2024 has been honored with the Silver A' Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design Award, recognizing its innovative approach to branding the convergence of AI and XR at Harvard University.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
HarvardXR 2024, a leading conference exploring the intersection of artificial intelligence and extended reality, unveiled a groundbreaking visual identity designed by Yutong Wang. Drawing inspiration from the fundamental role of pixels in digital experiences, Wang's design uses pixel-based visuals as a metaphor for collaboration and technological advancement. The identity system was developed to embody the innovative and approachable spirit of the conference, making complex technologies accessible to a diverse audience.
The visual identity was realized using Adobe Creative Suite for layout and branding, while randomized pixel matrices-featuring embedded "AI" and "XR" elements-were generated with C4D. This generative approach allowed for dynamic adaptation across digital screens, printed materials, signage, and branded merchandise. A structured color palette was introduced to differentiate participant roles, including speakers, sponsors, staff, and audience, enhancing clarity and engagement throughout the event. The design's adaptability ensures consistency and impact, whether displayed on social media graphics or large-scale banners up to 3048 mm in height.
Research and development for the project focused on integrating procedural methods to automate and enhance design consistency. Feedback from conference participants guided refinements in color differentiation and usability. One of the key challenges addressed was maintaining legibility and visual coherence across diverse formats and scales. To further personalize the attendee experience, custom digital ticket animations were generated and distributed via email upon registration. The resulting brand identity not only reflects the forward-thinking ethos of HarvardXR 2024 but also sets a new standard for visual communication in technology-focused events.
