Dino Stride: Adaptive Sneakers Designed for Children with Disabilities, Winner of the Iron A' Social Design Award 2025

Dino Stride, created by designer Eric Paskach, is a groundbreaking adaptive sneaker tailored for children who use lower-limb orthotics, addressing a long-standing gap in the footwear market. Unlike traditional orthotic shoes that are often scaled-down versions of adult models, Dino Stride is built from the ground up with children's needs, preferences, and self-esteem in mind. The project began in January 2024 and culminated in a public exhibition at Iowa State University in May 2024, where it received acclaim for its thoughtful approach and innovative features.

Inspired by the lack of child-focused solutions in orthotics-friendly footwear, Paskach conducted extensive research, including interviews and empathic role-play, to understand the daily challenges faced by children with cerebral palsy and similar conditions. The result is a shoe that not only accommodates ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs) but also excites young wearers with playful dinosaur details and a camo pattern. The breathable mesh knit upper reduces heat, while a deep sole ensures a secure fit for orthotics without sacrificing the familiar silhouette of kids' shoes. Easy-access side zippers allow the shoe to fold open, making it simple for children and caregivers to put on and remove the shoes, even with orthotics in place.

Dino Stride's design process prioritized empathy, inclusivity, and user empowerment. By focusing on the lived experiences of children and their caregivers, Paskach overcame the technical challenge of blending orthotic functionality with the aesthetics and comfort expected in children's footwear. The result is a product that supports rehabilitation, boosts confidence, and fosters a sense of belonging for children who often feel excluded by standard designs. Dino Stride's recognition with the Iron A' Social Design Award 2025 underscores its impact as a practical, innovative, and emotionally resonant solution for families and young users alike.
