Hou Liang's CoastalBam Jar, inspired by southeastern China's fishing culture, has been awarded the Iron A' Design Award 2025 for its innovative use of bamboo weaving and metalwork to create a sustainable salt jar that modernizes traditional brine collection, with the project developed in Ningbo and Xiangshan and showcased at the Red Dot Museum in Singapore.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CoastalBam Jar, designed by Hou Liang and his team, has been recognized with the Iron A' Bakeware, Tableware, Drinkware and Cookware Design Award 2025 for its unique approach to salt collection rooted in the daily lives of southeastern China's fishermen. The project began in January 2024 in Ningbo, Zhejiang, and concluded in March 2024 in Xiangshan, a traditional fishing village, before earning further acclaim at the Red Dot Museum in Singapore in October 2024. This innovative kitchenware reimagines the process of collecting brine from deliquescent coarse salt, a practice integral to the preparation of tofu and soy products in local communities.
Drawing inspiration from regional customs and the sustainable use of bamboo, the CoastalBam Jar features dual bamboo weaving filters combined with a corrosion-resistant aluminum alloy vessel. The design's open-mouth form allows for easy hand access, echoing the habits of local fishermen, while the bamboo weaving-crafted using hexagonal and cross weaving techniques-ensures effective filtration and air permeability. The integration of modern CNC metal processing with traditional bamboo craftsmanship not only enhances durability and hygiene but also pays homage to the area's rich cultural heritage and Feng Shui principles.
The development of the CoastalBam Jar involved extensive ethnographic research and collaboration with local artisans to master complex bamboo weaving methods. The result is a product that addresses both functional needs and cultural values, offering an eco-friendly, tactile, and visually harmonious solution for brine collection. The project's recognition by the A' Design Award and the Red Dot Design Award underscores its significance as a bridge between tradition and contemporary design, providing coastal communities with a practical tool that honors their way of life while embracing sustainability and innovation.
