FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Taichi Hirata's Wagon Remodeling project has been recognized with the prestigious Silver A' Social Design Award 2025, celebrating its innovative approach to revitalizing a beloved element of Japanese winter culture. Inspired by the comforting sight of food vans selling roasted sweet potatoes on chilly evenings, Hirata sought to capture the nostalgic warmth and communal spirit these wagons evoke, while introducing a fresh architectural perspective suited to modern city life. The project, developed in Kyoto from 2020 to 2023, reimagines the food van as both a functional mobile kitchen and a glowing beacon of warmth in urban environments.
Distinct from conventional food trucks, Wagon Remodeling integrates diagonal structural elements into its design, a nod to Kyoto's rhythmic latticework but with a contemporary twist. The van's frame is crafted from wood by skilled carpenters, while its surface is finished with FRP membranes by waterproofing and painting specialists, ensuring durability and aesthetic harmony. This architectural approach not only preserves the tactile and visual qualities of traditional Japanese craftsmanship but also allows the van to stand out as a unique figure within the cityscape, softly illuminating its surroundings with a warm, inviting glow reminiscent of light through shoji screens.
Despite budget constraints, Hirata leveraged his network of trusted construction professionals to maintain high quality while minimizing costs, treating the project as an extension of his architectural practice. The result is a food wagon that honors tradition while embracing innovation, offering a mobile space that delights both the senses and the spirit. With four units developed to date and each iteration building on lessons learned, Wagon Remodeling exemplifies how thoughtful design can bridge the past and present, enriching the everyday experiences of city dwellers and visitors alike.
