Takumi Takahashi's "Life Science Code" Monument Wins Platinum A' Design Award for Art Installation Excellence

JAPAN -- /COMMUNICATION/newswire -- Aug 05, 2024

Takumi Takahashi's "Life Science Code" monument, commissioned by Chugai Pharmaceutical for its Life Science Park in Totsuka, Kanagawa, Japan, has been awarded the prestigious Platinum A' Design Award 2025 for its innovative fusion of art, science, and sustainability, celebrating the mysteries and potential of life encoded in the human genome.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

"Life Science Code" Monument at Chugai Life Science Park Honored for Artistic and Scientific Innovation

The "Life Science Code" monument, designed by Takumi Takahashi and his team at HAKUTEN, stands as a striking testament to the profound mysteries of life science. Unveiled in May 2024 at Chugai Pharmaceutical's new research facility in Totsuka, Kanagawa, the six-meter-long installation draws inspiration from the human genome, symbolizing the intricate beauty and complexity of life. The monument's design integrates ancient stones, local flora, native trees, and medicinal herbs, all anchored by a transparent stone base illuminated from within to evoke water-the source of life. This thoughtful composition mirrors the process of drug creation through genome analysis, embedding the essence of evolution and human experience into its very structure.

What sets "Life Science Code" apart is its unique blend of natural and human-made materials, reflecting both the organic origins and scientific advancements of life science. The monument archives memories from nature, technology, and culture, juxtaposing elements that are typically incompatible to create a landscape that prompts reflection on sustainability and the interconnectedness of all life. Recycled wood and metal scraps were repurposed into furniture and structural components, embodying principles of circularity and environmental stewardship. As researchers and visitors engage with the monument, their reflections become part of the artwork, symbolizing the ongoing journey of discovery and the unknown possibilities encoded within the genome.

The creation of the monument was a collaborative effort, involving structural designer Naoki Iwama, metal hardware specialist Kenichi Ochiai, and creative director Chikako Kadoi, among others. The project was driven by extensive research into the inherited memories contained within DNA, as well as the cultural and technological heritage of Chugai's pharmaceutical innovations. Despite not being a commercial venture, the monument aims to inspire and support researchers by expressing the invisible mysteries of life science and by providing a spiritual anchor in their pursuit of scientific breakthroughs. The Platinum A' Design Award recognizes "Life Science Code" as a world-class, innovative work that advances the boundaries of art, science, and design.
