FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Nomad, created by Yetong Xin and Muwen Li, is a groundbreaking sci-fi animation short that reimagines the relationship between humanity and the environment. Developed at the MIT Media Lab in Boston from September 2023 to January 2024, Nomad draws inspiration from the alarming decline of Amazonian forests-specifically a 31% decrease in eastern Amazon forest cover by 2024-and explores how future societies might coexist sustainably with nature. The film envisions a mobile city that transports Amazonian tribes to new habitats as resources shift, embodying a dynamic, harmonious balance between technological advancement and ecological preservation.
What sets Nomad apart is its unique mechanical design, which eschews traditional metallic structures in favor of natural materials, creating a cityscape that feels alive and deeply connected to its environment. This biomimetic approach breaks from the cold, mechanized aesthetics typical of futuristic films, instead offering a vibrant, immersive experience that resonates emotionally with audiences. The animation leverages advanced digital tools-Photoshop for storyboarding, Blender for modeling, Cinema4D for animation and rendering, and After Effects for compositing-while integrating motion capture for lifelike character movement and a cinematic widescreen presentation for maximum impact.
Nomad's narrative and visual style are rooted in extensive research with MIT's City Science Group, focusing on Amazonian tribal beliefs and the potential for future cities to reflect shamanistic respect for nature. Overcoming creative challenges associated with reconciling high-tech futures and environmental stewardship, the team adopted a biomimetic design philosophy, resulting in a film that not only entertains but also provokes reflection on sustainable urban development. Since its completion, Nomad has been showcased at the Brooklyn Film Festival, D ARCH Film Festival, A+D Museum in Los Angeles, and METAXIS plus PROMPT Festival in Budapest, earning acclaim for its innovative vision and technical artistry.
