Lampo Leong, Distinguished Professor and Director at the University of Macau, has received the prestigious Iron A' Design Award 2025 for his latest project, "Magical Creatures." Developed in collaboration with Li Lin and Yanxiu Zhao, this AI-generated video art piece brings to life whimsical and colorful beings that inhabit both microcosmic and macrocosmic worlds. The project, completed in 2024, has been exhibited at renowned venues including Shenzhen Art Museum, the Contemporary Art Museum at the University of Macau, Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, and other leading institutions in China and Germany.
"Magical Creatures" stands out for its fusion of traditional artistic vision and cutting-edge digital technology. The creative process began with generating imaginative creatures using Adobe Firefly, followed by iterative refinement through AI prompts. The team enhanced the visuals with Photoshop, animated the scenes in Runway, and added immersive effects in TouchDesigner. The final artwork is enriched with underwater soundscapes, resulting in a captivating video installation that can be displayed on LED panels, monitors, or as part of interactive exhibitions.
The work invites viewers to reflect on humanity's relationship with the visible and invisible life forms that share our universe. By highlighting the importance of understanding and appreciating both microscopic and macroscopic worlds, "Magical Creatures" encourages peaceful coexistence and environmental stewardship. The project exemplifies how AI can extend the boundaries of artistic imagination, offering audiences a fresh perspective on the natural world and our place within it.
